Pyroclastic density current

A fast-moving, ground-hugging flow of hot gas, ash, and volcanic fragments. It can surge over terrain and remain deadly far from its source.

Turbidity current: A sediment-laden flow that moves downslope through water under gravity. It provides a fluid-flow comparison for understanding how density contrasts drive motion.
Plinian eruption: A sustained explosive eruption that produces a high column of gas and volcanic material. A collapsing Plinian column can generate a widespread pyroclastic density current.
Mount Pelée eruption of 1902: The 1902 eruption of Mount Pelée that devastated Saint-Pierre, Martinique, with a pyroclastic density current. Its destruction established the lethal reach of currents beyond the immediate volcanic slopes.

Lava dome: A steep-sided mound formed when viscous lava accumulates around a volcanic vent. Dome collapse can release hot blocks and ash as a block-and-ash flow.
1985 Nevado del Ruiz eruption: A Colombian eruption that melted summit ice and generated lahars that buried Armero. It distinguishes the downstream mudflows from the pyroclastic currents that generated them.
Volcanic hazard map: A map showing areas exposed to specified volcanic hazards. Maps identify valleys and slopes that currents may reach, guiding land-use and evacuation plans.
Granular flow: The collective motion of many solid grains under gravity or applied stress. Dense currents can behave partly like grains moving together rather than like ordinary gas.
Column collapse: The failure of an eruption column when it becomes too dense to remain buoyant. This is a direct route from explosive eruption to ground-hugging current.
