Qara Khitai

Qara Khitai, or the Western Liao dynasty, was a Central Asian empire founded by Khitan migrants in the 12th century. It ruled a multiethnic realm centered on Semirechye and Transoxiana.

Yelü Dashi: A Khitan prince who founded the Western Liao dynasty after the Jurchen conquest of the Liao dynasty. His westward migration and victory at Qatwan established the empire.
Liao dynasty: A Khitan-led dynasty that ruled northern China and parts of Mongolia from 907 to 1125. Qara Khitai preserved Liao dynastic claims after the dynasty’s defeat.
Transoxiana: The historical region between the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers in Central Asia. Qara Khitai dominance there altered the balance among Muslim dynasties and cities.
Seljuk Empire: A Turkic Muslim empire that dominated much of the Middle East and Central Asia from the 11th to 12th centuries. Its defeat at Qatwan marked the reversal of Seljuk influence in Transoxiana.
Gür Khan: A title meaning “universal khan,” used by rulers of the Qara Khitai. The title expressed sovereignty over a diverse realm without requiring direct rule everywhere.
Jin dynasty (1115–1234): A Jurchen-led dynasty that ruled northern China after overthrowing the Liao dynasty. Its conquest drove Yelü Dashi and his followers westward.
Khwarazmian Empire: A Muslim empire centered in Khwarazm that expanded across Central Asia and Iran in the 12th and 13th centuries. Its rulers first acknowledged Qara Khitai supremacy before challenging it.
Ghurid dynasty: A dynasty from the central Afghan highlands that expanded into northern India and parts of Iran in the 12th century. The Ghurids rose as Qara Khitai authority weakened in eastern Iran and Afghanistan.
Battle of Qatwan: A 1141 battle in which Qara Khitai forces defeated the Seljuk sultanate and its allies near Samarkand. The victory secured Qara Khitai supremacy in Transoxiana.
Khitan people: A people of Inner Asia who founded the Liao dynasty and later formed the Qara Khitai ruling elite. Khitan migrants carried the dynasty’s identity and political traditions into Central Asia.
