Qiang people

Qiang is a name used in historical Chinese sources for peoples living along China’s western and northwestern frontiers. Its referents shifted across periods and do not map neatly onto a single continuous ethnic group.

Shang dynasty: A Bronze Age Chinese dynasty conventionally dated to about 1600–1046 BCE. Oracle-bone inscriptions from this period include some of the earliest attestations of Qiang.
Qiang people (modern ethnic group): An officially recognized ethnic group in the People’s Republic of China, concentrated in northern Sichuan. The modern group shares the name, but cannot simply be equated with every ancient source’s Qiang.
Huaxia: An ancient Chinese cultural and political identity associated with the communities that became central to early Chinese states. Qiang appears in sources as an outside category defined in relation to central Chinese polities.
Han–Qiang wars: A series of conflicts between Han China and groups called Qiang, especially along the western frontier. These wars show how a broad textual label became tied to concrete imperial campaigns.
Oracle bone script: The earliest substantial corpus of Chinese writing, inscribed on bones and turtle shells for divination. Its inscriptions record Qiang in Shang-era divinations and military contexts.
Tibetan people: An ethnic group native to the Tibetan Plateau and surrounding regions, with diverse languages and communities. Historical sources often place Qiang communities in contact with Tibetan-speaking populations.
Sino-Tibetan languages: A proposed language family spanning Chinese languages and many languages of the Himalayas and East Asia. Modern linguistic affiliations are relevant but do not establish what ancient writers meant by Qiang.
Qiang rebellions: Uprisings by groups identified as Qiang in Chinese historical accounts, particularly during the late Han period. The recorded rebellions reveal the political consequences of frontier rule and local resistance.
Zhou dynasty: A Chinese dynasty that ruled from about 1046 to 256 BCE. Zhou-era texts preserve and reshape earlier categories for western peoples, including Qiang.
羌族: The Chinese name for the officially recognized Qiang ethnic group in modern China. This modern ethnonym is one present-day use of the historically layered Qiang name.
