Qianlong Emperor

The sixth emperor of the Qing dynasty, Qianlong ruled China from 1735 to 1796, expanding imperial territory while sponsoring major literary and artistic projects.

Ten Great Campaigns: A group of Qing military campaigns undertaken under Qianlong, including operations in Central Asia, Burma, and Taiwan. Their mixed costs and outcomes reveal both the reach and limits of Qianlong’s expansion.
Manchu people: An East Asian people whose rulers founded the Qing dynasty and governed China from 1644 to 1912. Qianlong’s Manchu identity shaped court traditions and the dynasty’s strategies of rule.

Literary Inquisition: The Qing practice of punishing writings judged politically subversive or offensive to imperial rule. The court’s textual scrutiny accompanied its extensive sponsorship of books and scholarship.
Qianlong Emperor's abdication: Qianlong’s formal transfer of the throne to his son Jiaqing in 1796, after sixty years of rule. The formal abdication contrasts with his continued exercise of power until 1799.
Qing conquest of Taiwan: The Qing suppression of the Lin Shuangwen rebellion in Taiwan in 1787–1788, followed by stronger imperial control. The campaign extended Qianlong’s authority while exposing the expense of governing distant provinces.
Kangxi Emperor: The Qing emperor who ruled from 1661 to 1722 and established a long period of consolidation and prosperity. Qianlong’s grandfather supplied a model of long, successful imperial rule.
