Qilian Mountains

The Qilian Mountains are a mountain range along the northeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau in northwestern China. Their glaciers and snowfields feed rivers that sustain oases and agriculture in the arid Hexi Corridor.

Tibetan Plateau: A vast, high-elevation region of Central and East Asia, bounded by major mountain systems. The Qilian Mountains form part of its northeastern margin.
Asian monsoon: A seasonal wind and rainfall system that brings summer moisture to much of Asia. Its reach helps determine precipitation patterns across the range’s eastern reaches.
Shiyang River: A river originating in the eastern Qilian Mountains and flowing into the inland basins of the Hexi Corridor. Its headwaters supply oases and irrigated land along the corridor’s eastern end.
Qilian Shan National Nature Reserve: A protected area in Gansu established to conserve ecosystems in the Qilian Mountains. It represents an earlier form of formal protection within the mountain range.
Glacier retreat: The long-term shrinkage of glaciers caused when ice loss exceeds accumulation. Monitoring determines how quickly Qilian ice reserves and meltwater patterns are changing.
Hexi Corridor: An elongated passage in Gansu Province between the Qilian Mountains and the deserts to the north. This arid corridor lies directly north of the range.
Westerlies: Prevailing midlatitude winds that transport air and moisture from west to east. They influence precipitation and snowfall in the range, especially toward its western sectors.
Heihe River: A major inland river rising in the Qilian Mountains and crossing the Hexi Corridor into the desert. Its basin links mountain runoff to agriculture and ecosystems downstream.
Lenglong Ling: A high mountain massif in the Qilian range, often identified as its highest section. Its summits illustrate the range’s extreme elevations and glaciated terrain.
Water scarcity in China: A condition in which available water resources cannot reliably meet human and ecological needs in parts of China. Growing demand downstream can intensify competition for water originating in the range.
