Qing military

The Qing military comprised the dynasty’s banner armies, Green Standard troops, and naval forces. Its organization and effectiveness changed as the empire expanded, faced internal rebellions, and confronted foreign powers.

Eight Banners: A hereditary military and administrative system that organized Manchu, Mongol, and Han-banner households. The banner system formed the Qing dynasty’s core military institutions and elite garrisons.
Qing military ranks: The titles and command offices used to organize military authority in the Qing dynasty. Rank and appointment determined how banner and Green Standard officers exercised command.
Qing conquest of China: The Manchu-led conquest that established Qing rule over China in the seventeenth century. Banner forces and allied troops built the dynasty’s initial military power during this conquest.
Xiang Army: A regional army raised by Zeng Guofan and other officials to suppress the Taiping Rebellion. Its provincial recruitment and leadership contrasted with the dynasty’s older banner and Green Standard institutions.
Qing conquest of Xinjiang: The Qing campaigns that defeated the Dzungar Khanate and established control over the region later called Xinjiang. Military campaigns made Xinjiang part of the Qing Empire and required lasting frontier garrisons.
Green Standard Army: A largely Han Chinese force that served the Qing dynasty in garrisons, policing, and campaigns. It supplemented banner forces and supplied much of the empire’s routine provincial military presence.
Qing military examinations: Examinations testing candidates’ martial skills and knowledge for military official positions in Qing China. They offered one route into the officer corps, alongside hereditary and patronage-based appointments.
Dzungar–Qing Wars: A series of conflicts between the Qing Empire and the Dzungar Khanate in Central Asia during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. These wars show Qing forces campaigning far beyond China proper.
Huai Army: A regional force organized by Li Hongzhang that fought the Taiping and other rebellions. Its growing importance showed how Qing military power shifted toward locally raised armies.
Qing conquest of Tibet: The Qing military intervention in Tibet in 1720 that expelled Dzungar forces and established Qing influence. It illustrates how military intervention could reshape Qing authority in a frontier region.
