Qinling
The Qinling is a major mountain range in central China that separates northern and southern China and divides the Yellow and Yangtze River basins.
Huai River: A major river in eastern China, historically associated with the boundary between northern and southern China. The Qinling–Huai line is a widely used geographic and climatic division between northern and southern China.
Qinling–Huaihe Line: A geographic boundary conventionally used to distinguish northern and southern China. The Qinling form the western mountainous portion of this climatic and cultural dividing line.
Guanzhong Plain: A fertile plain in central Shaanxi Province, bounded by the Qinling to the south. The plain forms a major settled region immediately north of the range.
Northern and southern China: Two broad geographic and cultural regions distinguished by climate, landscapes, and historical development. The Qinling anchor a conventional dividing line between these regions.
Yellow River: A major river of northern China and the country’s second-longest river. The Qinling help separate the Yellow River basin from the Yangtze basin.
Giant panda: A bear species native to central China, known for its bamboo-based diet. Qinling populations are an isolated subspecies with distinctive physical traits.
Sichuan Basin: A densely populated basin in southwestern China, surrounded by mountains and plateaus. The Qinling and Daba ranges help separate it from the basins farther north.
Qinling Mountains climate: The range’s varied climate, shaped by elevation and its position between northern and southern China. Its slopes create sharp differences in temperature, rainfall, and vegetation across short distances.
Yangtze River: The longest river in Asia, flowing east across China to the East China Sea. The range’s southern slopes drain toward the Yangtze River system.
Qinling panda: A subspecies of giant panda native to the Qinling Mountains, distinguished by its brown-and-white coat in some individuals. It is the range’s best-known endemic mammal population.
