QR code

A two-dimensional matrix barcode that encodes data in a pattern of square modules readable by imaging devices. Its error-correction system allows data recovery even when part of the symbol is damaged or obscured.

Reed–Solomon error correction: An error-correcting code that adds redundant symbols so damaged or missing data can be reconstructed. QR codes use it to recover encoded data when parts of a symbol are obscured.
Denso Wave: A Japanese company that developed the QR code in the 1990s. Its engineering team created the code to track automotive components.
URL: A standardized address identifying a resource on a computer network. QR codes commonly encode URLs to open web pages from a scan.

QR code mask pattern: A reversible pattern applied to QR code modules to avoid visually problematic arrangements. The encoder selects a mask that reduces patterns likely to confuse scanners.
Toyota Production System: A management and manufacturing system developed by Toyota, centered on efficient production and waste reduction. The need to track parts in this manufacturing context prompted QR code development.
