Quadratura

Quadratura is architectural painting that uses perspective to make walls and ceilings appear to open into fictional structures or expanded spaces. It integrates painted architecture with a building’s real geometry.

Linear perspective: A system for representing three-dimensional space on a flat surface through converging lines and a fixed viewpoint. Its projected lines align painted architecture with the building’s apparent depth.
Andrea Mantegna: An Italian Renaissance painter known for sharply foreshortened figures and perspectival illusion. His Camera degli Sposi ceiling helped establish a landmark model for painted openings above.
Sant'Ignazio, Rome: A Jesuit church in Rome whose nave ceiling features a large illusionistic fresco by Andrea Pozzo. Its painted architecture appears to extend the church upward into a heavenly scene.
Fresco: A mural technique in which pigments are applied to wet lime plaster and become fixed as it dries. Fresco was a common surface technique for large-scale quadratura interiors.
Foreshortening: A technique that depicts an object shorter than its actual length to convey depth and orientation. It compresses painted architectural forms viewed from below.
Camera degli Sposi: A room in Mantua’s Ducal Palace decorated by Andrea Mantegna with frescoes completed in 1474. Its ceiling oculus creates an influential illusion of an opening into the sky.
Andrea Pozzo: An Italian Jesuit painter, architect, and theorist known for illusionistic ceiling paintings. His work at Sant'Ignazio became a defining example of quadratura.
Ceiling painting: Painting made on an interior ceiling, often designed to be viewed from below. Quadratura commonly appears as one kind of painted ceiling decoration.
Anamorphosis: An image distorted so that it appears correctly proportioned only from a particular viewpoint or through a device. Like quadratura, it depends on viewpoint, but its image usually resolves from one restricted position.
Baldassare Peruzzi: An Italian Renaissance architect and painter whose work joined architectural design with illusionistic perspective. His painted perspectives helped connect Renaissance scenography with later architectural illusion.
