Quantum decoherence

Quantum decoherence is the suppression of observable interference when a quantum system becomes correlated with its environment. It explains why superpositions become difficult to observe without requiring the system to collapse into a single outcome.

Quantum entanglement: A physical relationship in which the joint quantum state of multiple systems cannot be separated into independent states. Interactions entangle a system with its surroundings, encoding information that suppresses interference.
Quantum superposition: A quantum state formed from a linear combination of distinct possible states. Interference can occur only while alternatives in a superposition retain suitable phase relations.
Wave function collapse: A proposed change in a quantum state from a superposition to a definite outcome during measurement. Decoherence suppresses interference but does not, on its own, produce a single definite outcome.
Quantum computing: A form of computation that uses quantum states and operations to process information. Uncontrolled decoherence corrupts the superpositions and entanglement needed for quantum algorithms.
Reduced density matrix: A density operator describing part of a composite quantum system after the other parts are mathematically traced out. Tracing over environmental degrees of freedom reveals the system's loss of coherence.
Density matrix: A mathematical operator that represents quantum states, including statistical mixtures and coherent superpositions. It tracks coherence even when a system is entangled with degrees of freedom not observed.
Quantum dissipation: The transfer of energy from a quantum system to its surroundings through interactions. Energy loss can accompany decoherence, but phase coherence can disappear without substantial energy transfer.
Quantum error correction: Methods for protecting quantum information by encoding it across multiple physical degrees of freedom. These codes detect and correct errors caused by environmental interactions without directly measuring encoded information.
Pointer state: A state selected by environmental interaction that remains comparatively stable against decoherence. These states retain information despite environmental monitoring and define preferred classical-looking outcomes.
Quantum measurement: A physical interaction that yields information about a quantum system and produces an outcome described by measurement theory. Decoherence helps explain why measurement outcomes behave classically, but does not by itself select one outcome.
