Knowra Quarrying Quarrying Quarrying is the extraction of stone from exposed or near-surface natural deposits. It produces dimension stone, crushed rock, and materials such as limestone for construction and industry.
Bench quarrying : A quarrying method that removes rock in successive horizontal levels called benches. Benches organize deep open excavations and provide working faces for extraction.
Bedrock : The solid rock beneath soil, sediment, and other surface deposits. Quarry operations reach deposits within or exposed at the bedrock surface.
Crushed stone : Rock mechanically broken into fragments and graded by size for construction and industrial uses. It is one of the largest-volume products made by quarrying.
Quarry rehabilitation : The process of stabilizing and restoring a quarry site during or after extraction. Rehabilitation plans address landforms and habitats altered by quarrying.
Underground mining : The extraction of minerals through tunnels, shafts, and other workings beneath the surface. It reaches deposits below ground rather than removing stone mainly from open excavations.
Diamond wire saw : A cutting tool that uses a steel cable embedded with diamond segments to saw hard materials. Quarry operators use it to separate large, regular blocks with limited vibration.
Limestone : A sedimentary rock composed mainly of calcium carbonate, often formed from marine organisms or chemical precipitation. It is quarried for building stone, aggregate, and cement manufacture.
Portland cement : A hydraulic cement made by heating limestone and other materials into clinker, then grinding it with gypsum. Quarried limestone supplies the principal raw material for most Portland cement.
Acid mine drainage : Acidic, metal-rich water formed when sulfide minerals are exposed to oxygen and water. Quarrying sulfide-bearing rock can expose minerals that generate contaminated drainage.
Sand mining : The removal of sand from terrestrial, river, coastal, or marine deposits. It targets loose sediment rather than coherent bedrock or large stone blocks.
