Queen regnant

A queen regnant is a female monarch who holds sovereign authority in her own right, rather than through marriage to a reigning king.

Monarch: A sovereign head of state whose office is usually hereditary or held for life. A queen regnant is one form of monarch, defined by sovereign authority rather than gender-neutral title.
Elizabeth I: Queen of England and Ireland from 1558 to 1603, whose reign saw England become a major maritime power. Her long reign is a prominent example of a queen exercising authority without a king consort.
