Queer literature

Literature that explores LGBTQ+ lives, identities, desires, and relationships, often challenging norms of gender, sexuality, and belonging.

Sappho: An archaic Greek poet whose surviving fragments include poems of desire between women. Her fragments are among the earliest surviving works associated with same-sex desire.
The Picture of Dorian Gray: Oscar Wilde’s 1890 novel about a man whose portrait bears the marks of his hidden life. Its homoerotic subtext and censorship history exemplify Victorian constraints on queer expression.
Sexual orientation: A person’s enduring pattern of romantic, emotional, or sexual attraction. It names one dimension of the desires represented in queer literature.
Heteronormativity: The assumption that heterosexuality and conventional gender roles are natural or universal. Queer literature often exposes or contests the social expectations this concept describes.
Oscar Wilde: An Irish playwright, poet, and novelist imprisoned for his same-sex relationships. His trial and imprisonment made the dangers facing queer writers publicly visible.
Orlando: A Biography: Virginia Woolf’s 1928 novel follows a protagonist who lives for centuries and changes sex. Its playful treatment of gender and time resists fixed identity categories.
Gender identity: A person’s internal sense of their gender, which may or may not match sex assigned at birth. It helps distinguish gendered experience from sexual orientation in literary characters and authors.
Homosexuality in literature: The representation of same-sex attraction and relationships in literary works. This narrower frame does not necessarily include transgender lives or broader queer identities.
The Well of Loneliness: A 1928 novel by Radclyffe Hall about a lesbian woman whose publication prompted an obscenity trial. Its prosecution shows how censorship shaped early twentieth-century lesbian writing.
Giovanni’s Room: James Baldwin’s 1956 novel follows an American man confronting desire and identity in Paris. Its intimate account of gay desire brought queer experience into a major literary novel.
