Quinine

Quinine is a bitter alkaloid found in cinchona bark. It treats malaria and gives tonic water its characteristic bitterness.

Heme polymerization: The conversion of toxic heme released during hemoglobin digestion into an insoluble crystal called hemozoin. Quinine disrupts this detoxification pathway in malaria parasites, though its precise action remains debated.
Jesuit's bark: A historical name for cinchona bark, used in Europe as a remedy for fever. The name reflects the bark’s early circulation through Jesuit networks.
Antimalarial drug: A medicine used to prevent or treat malaria by acting against Plasmodium parasites. Quinine is one member of this drug class, now used selectively.
Malaria prophylaxis: Measures taken to prevent malaria infection, including medicines, mosquito control, and protective barriers. Quinine made drug-based prevention possible for travelers and colonial forces.

Pierre Joseph Pelletier: A French chemist who isolated quinine and several other plant alkaloids with Joseph Caventou. Pelletier and Caventou isolated quinine from cinchona bark in 1820.
