Surah : A chapter of the Quran, one of its 114 main divisions. Surahs are the Quran’s primary divisions, each with its own name and sequence of verses.

Bible : A collection of sacred texts regarded as scripture in Christianity and, in different forms, Judaism. The Bible and Quran differ in structure, religious authority, and accounts of shared figures.
Ayah : A numbered verse or sign within a surah of the Quran. Ayahs are the smaller units that compose each surah.
Mecca : A city in western Arabia and Islam’s holiest city. The earliest Quranic revelations are traditionally associated with Muhammad’s time in Mecca.
Hifz : The practice of memorizing and preserving the Quran by heart. Complete memorization makes the Quran available through oral transmission as well as written copies.
Hadith : Reports about Muhammad’s words, actions, and approvals, transmitted in Islamic tradition. Hadith are a distinct source from the Quran, though both inform Islamic belief and practice.
Arabic language : A Semitic language originating in the Arabian Peninsula and used across much of the Middle East and North Africa. The Quran’s original wording is Arabic, shaping its sound, vocabulary, and interpretation.
Medina : A city in western Arabia where Muhammad established the first Muslim community. Many later revelations are associated with the Muslim community formed in Medina.
