Ra

Ra is the ancient Egyptian sun god, associated with creation and kingship. Egyptian traditions describe him traveling across the sky by day and through the underworld by night.

Solar barque: A divine boat in Egyptian religion that carries solar deities across the sky and through the underworld. Ra’s voyage was imagined as a passage aboard this boat.
Heliopolis: An ancient Egyptian city and major center of solar worship, called Iunu in Egyptian. Heliopolis was the principal cult center associated with Ra and his creation theology.

Abu Gorab: An archaeological site near Abusir containing the remains of Fifth Dynasty solar temples. Its temples show how royal devotion to Ra took architectural form.
Akhenaten: An Egyptian pharaoh who promoted the worship of Aten and restricted traditional cults during his reign. His religious reforms challenged the institutions and traditions that sustained Ra’s cult.
