Rabih az-Zubayr

Rabih az-Zubayr was a Sudanese military leader who built an empire in the central Sudan and ruled parts of the region in the late nineteenth century.

Turkiyah: The period of Ottoman-Egyptian rule in Sudan from 1821 to 1885. The Egyptian conquest and its military legacy shaped the world in which Rabih first gained power.
Mahdist State: The state established in Sudan by Muhammad Ahmad’s followers after the capture of Khartoum in 1885. Rabih’s military career began within this state’s forces before he established independent rule.
