Racial passing

Racial passing is being socially accepted as a member of a racial group different from one’s ancestry. It has often involved concealing or being perceived as concealing a stigmatized ancestry.

Hypodescent: The assignment of a person with mixed ancestry to the socially subordinate racial group. Rules of ancestry shaped who could pass and which identities were treated as credible.
Passing (novel): Nella Larsen’s 1929 novel about two Black women whose lives diverge around racial passing. The novel traces passing as both a personal choice and a source of danger.
Hypodescent in the United States: The historical assignment of people of mixed ancestry to a subordinate racial category in the United States. This system helped make Black ancestry a barrier to legal and social recognition as white.
Racial segregation in the United States: The enforced separation of people by race in United States public life, especially under Jim Crow. Passing could provide entry into spaces from which Black people were excluded.
Ethnic passing: Being accepted as a member of an ethnic group different from one’s ancestry or background. It parallels racial passing but concerns ethnic boundaries that do not always map onto race.
One-drop rule: A racial classification rule that assigns anyone with any known Black ancestry to the Black category. Its strict ancestry threshold made passing a way to evade imposed classification.
The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man: James Weldon Johnson’s 1912 novel about a biracial narrator who chooses to live as white. Its narrator makes passing an explicit decision shaped by opportunity and loss.
Jim Crow laws: State and local laws enforcing racial segregation in the United States, especially in the South, from the late nineteenth century into the 1960s. Segregation made racial classification a determinant of access, safety, and legal status.
Anti-miscegenation laws: Laws prohibiting interracial marriage, enforced in many United States states until the Supreme Court invalidated them in 1967. Passing could conceal a relationship or ancestry targeted by marriage restrictions.
Gender passing: Being perceived as a gender different from one assigned or previously recognized in a given setting. The comparison highlights shared dynamics of perception while keeping racial and gender histories distinct.
