Racialization : The process by which people, practices, or differences acquire racial meaning. It shows how categories that organize racism are produced and applied.
Race : A social classification that groups people using perceived ancestry, appearance, and related traits. Racism organizes power and treatment around categories understood as racial.
Colonialism : The practice of establishing control over another territory and its people, often through settlement and extraction. Colonial rule helped construct racial hierarchies to justify conquest and exploitation.
Colorism : Preferential or discriminatory treatment based on skin tone, often within a racial or ethnic group. It can operate within racial groups and is related to, but distinct from, racism.
Stereotype : A generalized belief about members of a social group, often applied without regard to individual differences. Racial stereotypes can supply assumptions that shape discriminatory judgments.
Racial prejudice : A negative attitude or judgment directed at people because of their perceived race. It names an attitude that can contribute to racist conduct and institutions.
Atlantic slave trade : The forced transportation of millions of Africans across the Atlantic for enslavement in the Americas. Its racialized system of hereditary enslavement shaped enduring categories and inequalities.
Xenophobia : Fear or hostility toward people perceived as foreign or unfamiliar. Hostility toward outsiders may overlap with racism but is organized around perceived foreignness.
Discrimination : Unequal treatment of people based on actual or perceived group membership. It is one way racial prejudice produces unequal outcomes in everyday decisions.
Power (social and political) : The capacity to shape decisions, resources, rules, and the conditions under which people live. Power distinguishes systemic racism from prejudice understood only as personal dislike.
