Raden Wijaya

Raden Wijaya founded Majapahit in Java in 1293 and became its first ruler, taking the royal title Kertarajasa Jayawardhana.

Singhasari Kingdom: A Javanese kingdom that flourished in East Java from the thirteenth century until its fall in 1292. Its collapse created the opening through which Wijaya established Majapahit.
Majapahit: A Javanese empire founded in 1293 that became a major power across the Indonesian archipelago. Wijaya’s kingdom grew into the empire associated with his founding.
Tribhuwana: A daughter of Kertanegara who became one of Raden Wijaya’s wives. Her marriage connected Wijaya to Singhasari’s ruling house.
Nagarakretagama: A fourteenth-century Old Javanese poem recounting Majapahit’s court, rulers, and territories. Its account preserves a prominent later portrayal of Wijaya and the dynasty’s beginnings.
Kertanegara: The last ruler of Singhasari, whose expansionist policies provoked conflict with neighboring powers. Wijaya was Kertanegara’s son-in-law and rose after the king’s death.
Raden Wijaya's alliance with the Mongols: A temporary military partnership in 1293 between Wijaya and the Yuan expeditionary force in Java. The alliance let Wijaya defeat Jayakatwang before he expelled his former allies.
Gayatri Rajapatni: A daughter of Kertanegara and a queen of Raden Wijaya who later became a powerful dynastic matriarch. Her lineage and descendants helped secure the dynasty Wijaya established.
Pararaton: A Javanese chronicle containing traditions about Singhasari and Majapahit rulers. It supplies a different narrative tradition about Wijaya’s rise and early reign.
Jayakatwang: A ruler of the Kadiri kingdom who overthrew Singhasari in 1292. His attack displaced Wijaya and set the founding struggle in motion.
Trowulan: An archaeological site in East Java associated with the capital of the Majapahit kingdom. The new royal center anchored the kingdom Wijaya founded.
