Radiation-induced cancer

Radiation-induced cancer is malignancy that develops after ionizing radiation damages cellular DNA and contributes to mutations driving uncontrolled growth. Its risk depends on radiation type, dose, exposed tissue, and time.

Ionizing radiation: Radiation energetic enough to remove electrons from atoms and molecules, potentially damaging biological tissue. It is the class of radiation capable of initiating the DNA damage involved.
Acute radiation syndrome: A severe illness caused by receiving a large dose of penetrating ionizing radiation over a short period. It is an acute tissue injury, distinct from the delayed cancer risk of radiation.
Atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki: The 1945 nuclear attacks on two Japanese cities, followed by long-term health studies of survivors. Survivor follow-up established dose-related evidence for several radiation-associated cancers.
