Radical Reformation

The Radical Reformation was a diverse 16th-century movement whose groups pursued breaks with established churches and authorities beyond those sought by magisterial Protestant reformers.

Magisterial Reformation: The Protestant Reformation led by reformers who relied on magistrates and established political authorities. Its cooperation with rulers marks the political boundary many radical reformers rejected.
Congregationalism: A form of church governance in which each local congregation manages its own affairs. Local self-government gave separated communities authority without relying on territorial church structures.
Swiss Brethren: An early Anabaptist movement that emerged in Zurich and nearby Swiss territories in the 1520s. Their break with Zurich’s reformers is a key starting point for organized Radical Reformation history.
