Radio galaxy

A galaxy whose central supermassive black hole powers strong radio emission, often through jets and lobes extending beyond the visible galaxy.

Active galactic nucleus: A compact, energetic region at a galaxy’s center powered by matter accreting onto a supermassive black hole. Radio galaxies are one class of galaxies with an active galactic nucleus.
Cygnus A: A powerful radio galaxy whose bright lobes and hotspots make it one of the strongest extragalactic radio sources. Its well-resolved jets and lobes provide a classic view of a powerful radio galaxy.
Radio-loud quasar: A quasar with powerful radio emission, usually produced by relativistic jets from its active nucleus. It can share radio-galaxy jet physics but appears much brighter at the nucleus.
Active galactic nucleus feedback: The influence of energy and matter from an active galactic nucleus on its host galaxy and surroundings. Radio jets heat and disturb gas, regulating cooling and star formation in and around the host.
Radio astronomy: The study of astronomical objects through the radio waves they emit or absorb. Radio astronomy revealed galaxies whose radio structures extend far beyond their optical images.
Relativistic jet: A narrow outflow of particles moving close to the speed of light from a compact astronomical source. Jets carry energy from the central engine into the surrounding environment.
Centaurus A: A nearby active galaxy with prominent radio jets and lobes, also known as NGC 5128. Its proximity makes its extended radio structures unusually accessible to detailed study.
Radio-quiet quasar: A quasar whose radio emission is weak relative to its optical emission. Its subdued radio output contrasts with the prominent jets typical of powerful radio galaxies.
Radio-mode feedback: A form of black-hole feedback in which jets heat surrounding gas and suppress its cooling. Radio galaxies are prominent sources of the jets that drive this feedback in massive galaxies.
3C catalog: The Third Cambridge Catalogue of Radio Sources, a foundational catalog of strong radio emitters. Its sources, including Cygnus A, helped astronomers identify and investigate radio galaxies.
