Radioactive contamination

Radioactive contamination is the presence of radioactive substances in places or materials where they can expose people or ecosystems. It differs from irradiation, which exposes something to radiation without necessarily leaving radioactive material behind.

Radionuclide: An atom with an unstable nucleus that decays and emits ionizing radiation. Radioactive contamination consists of radionuclides deposited in places or materials.
Radiation monitoring: The measurement of radiation or radioactive material in people, places, and objects. Monitoring detects contamination and tracks changes in its extent.
Chernobyl disaster: The 1986 explosion and fire at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant that released radioactive material. Its fallout contaminated large areas and prompted long-term exclusion and cleanup.
Irradiation: Exposure of a person or object to ionizing radiation, which does not necessarily make it radioactive. Irradiation can occur without radioactive substances being deposited or retained.
Radioactive decay: The spontaneous transformation of an unstable atomic nucleus, often releasing ionizing radiation. Decay determines how contaminated materials emit radiation and change over time.
Radiological survey: A structured measurement of radiation levels or radioactive material across a defined area. Surveys map contaminated locations to guide access restrictions and cleanup.
Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster: The 2011 nuclear accident in Japan triggered by an earthquake and tsunami. Releases to land and sea made contamination monitoring and remediation central challenges.
Radioactive pollution: Environmental pollution caused by the release or presence of radioactive substances. This broader environmental framing overlaps with contamination but emphasizes harmful pollution.
Radioactive half-life: The time required for half the radioactive nuclei in a sample to decay. Half-life helps estimate how long contamination remains radioactive.
Radiation protection: The practice of limiting harmful exposure to ionizing radiation. Protection measures reduce doses from contaminated environments and materials.
