Radiobiology

Radiobiology studies how ionizing and non-ionizing radiation affect biological molecules, cells, organisms, and populations. It connects radiation exposure to chemical damage, cellular responses, tissue effects, and health outcomes.

Ionizing radiation: Radiation with enough energy to remove electrons from atoms or molecules. Its ionizations initiate many of the molecular changes studied in radiobiology.
Radiation therapy: The treatment of disease, especially cancer, using ionizing radiation. It uses differential tissue responses to control tumors while limiting normal-tissue injury.
Absorbed dose: The energy deposited by radiation per unit mass, measured in grays. It is the physical starting point for relating exposure to biological response.
Non-ionizing radiation: Radiation that lacks enough energy per photon to ionize atoms or molecules. Its interactions differ from ionizing radiation, though they can still produce biological effects.
Wilhelm Röntgen: The physicist who discovered X-rays in 1895. X-ray imaging quickly revealed that radiation could also injure living tissue.
Linear energy transfer: The energy deposited by radiation per unit distance traveled through matter. It helps explain why equal absorbed doses can produce different biological effects.
Radiation protection: The practice of limiting harmful exposure to ionizing radiation. Radiobiological evidence informs exposure limits and protective practices.
Equivalent dose: A radiation-protection quantity that weights absorbed dose by radiation type. It accounts for differences in biological effectiveness among radiation types.
Thermal effects of radiofrequency radiation: Biological changes caused by tissue heating from absorbed radiofrequency energy. Heating is a distinct pathway from the ionization-driven damage central to much radiobiology.
Henri Becquerel: The physicist who discovered natural radioactivity in 1896. His discovery opened the study of biological effects from radioactive emissions.
