Ragamuffin War

The Ragamuffin War was a separatist rebellion in southern Brazil against the Empire of Brazil, fought from 1835 to 1845. Its rebels proclaimed the Riograndense Republic and briefly established the Juliana Republic in Santa Catarina.

Riograndense Republic: A separatist republic proclaimed by rebels in Rio Grande do Sul during the Ragamuffin War. It was the rebellion’s central political project, proclaimed after rebels captured Porto Alegre.
Charqueada: A Brazilian salting establishment where beef was processed into charque, or dried salted meat. The charque trade faced taxes and competition that fed Rio Grande do Sul’s grievances.
Bento Gonçalves da Silva: A Rio Grande do Sul landowner and military leader who became president of the Riograndense Republic. He led the rebellion through much of the war, including periods of imprisonment.
Ragamuffin War settlement: The political and military terms under which Rio Grande do Sul returned to imperial rule in 1845. The settlement offered amnesty and concessions while ending separatist government.

Rio Grande do Sul: Brazil’s southernmost state, bordering Uruguay and Argentina. The province was the rebellion’s principal base and the site of most fighting.
