Railway time

Railway time is standardized clock time adopted by railway companies to coordinate train schedules across places that previously kept different local times.

Great Western Railway: A British railway company that introduced a unified time across its network in 1840. Its adoption of Greenwich time became an early model for coordinating a railway network.
Railway timetable: A published schedule listing train routes, stops, and departure and arrival times. Timetables gave standardized railway time its practical meaning for operations and passengers.
Time zone: A region that uses the same standard time, usually offset from Coordinated Universal Time. Railway coordination helped motivate regional time standards broader than individual railway lines.
Apparent solar time: Time measured directly by the Sun’s apparent position in the sky. Its location-dependent readings underlay the local clock differences railway time resolved.

Greenwich Mean Time: Mean solar time at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, historically used as a British time standard. British railways adopted it in place of varying local times.
Time ball: A public time signal made by dropping a visible ball at a precisely set moment. Time balls let railway workers and the public set clocks to a shared standard.
