Raincoat

A raincoat is an outer garment designed to keep rain from wetting the body and clothing. It works through waterproof or water-resistant materials, protective construction, or both.

Waterproof fabric: Fabric that prevents liquid water from passing through under specified conditions. Raincoats rely on waterproof fabrics or coatings to block rain.
Rainwear: Garments designed to protect the wearer from rain and wet conditions. Raincoats are one garment type within the broader category of rainwear.
Trench coat: A belted, often double-breasted coat developed for military use and commonly made in water-resistant fabric. The trench coat is a recognizable long raincoat style with origins in military outerwear.
Umbrella: A portable canopy held above a person to shield them from rain or sunlight. An umbrella sheds rain without enclosing the body like a raincoat.
Water-resistant fabric: Fabric treated or constructed to resist wetting without necessarily stopping water under sustained exposure. Some raincoats repel light rain but may leak during prolonged downpours.
Rain poncho: A loose, sleeveless waterproof covering that drapes over the wearer and often over carried equipment. Its open, draped shape protects differently from a fitted raincoat.
Mackintosh: A raincoat made from rubberized cloth, named after Scottish chemist Charles Macintosh. The Mackintosh is a historic raincoat type built around a rubberized waterproof material.
Hardshell: A protective outer layer designed to block wind and precipitation, often using waterproof-breathable fabric. Hardshell jackets share raincoat functions but are commonly designed for technical outdoor use.
DWR coating: A durable water-repellent finish that encourages water to bead and roll off fabric surfaces. The finish helps a raincoat shed water before its outer fabric becomes saturated.
Windbreaker: A lightweight jacket designed primarily to reduce wind exposure, often with limited rain resistance. Windbreakers may resemble raincoats but are not necessarily waterproof.
