Raised field

A cultivated plot elevated above surrounding ground, often between drainage channels. Its height improves drainage, regulates water, or creates favorable soil conditions.

Drainage: The removal or movement of excess water from soil or land. Channels beside raised plots carry surplus water away from crops.

Lake Titicaca raised fields: Pre-Columbian agricultural ridges and canals constructed around Lake Titicaca in the Andes. These extensive fields adapted cultivation to high-altitude wetlands and frost risk.
Frost protection: Methods that reduce crop damage from freezing temperatures. Raised surfaces can hold warmer air near crops and reduce frost exposure in some settings.
Beni earthworks: Pre-Columbian landscape modifications in Bolivia’s Llanos de Moxos, including canals, mounds, and raised fields. These earthworks show raised fields integrated into a broad network of water-control features.
Chinampa: An artificial agricultural island built in shallow lake beds, especially in the Valley of Mexico. Chinampas combine raised cultivation surfaces with surrounding water for irrigation and access.
Llanos de Moxos: A seasonally flooded lowland region in the Bolivian Amazon. Its earthworks include raised fields suited to alternating floods and dry periods.
