Knowra Rajya Sabha Rajya Sabha The Rajya Sabha is the upper house of India’s Parliament, representing the states and union territories through elected members and including members nominated by the president.
Rajya Sabha election : The process by which state and territorial legislatures elect members to India’s upper house using proportional representation by single transferable vote. State legislators choose most members through this proportional voting system.
Parliament of India : India’s national legislature, consisting of the president, the Lok Sabha, and the Rajya Sabha. The Rajya Sabha is one of Parliament’s two houses.
Ordinary bill : A proposed law that is not a Money Bill or constitutional amendment and may be introduced in either house of Parliament. Both houses generally must pass an ordinary bill before it becomes law.
Constituent Assembly of India : The body that drafted and adopted the Constitution of India between 1946 and 1949. Its debates shaped the structure and purpose of the upper house.
Rajya Sabha nominated members : Twelve Rajya Sabha members nominated by the president for special knowledge or practical experience in fields including literature, science, art, and social service. The nominated seats add expertise and perspectives beyond electoral representation.
Lok Sabha : The lower house of India’s Parliament, whose members are directly elected by voters and whose composition can be dissolved. Its direct election and greater control over government contrast with the Rajya Sabha’s design.
Constitutional amendment in India : A formal change to the Constitution of India made under the procedures in Article 368 or other applicable provisions. The Rajya Sabha has equal authority with the Lok Sabha on constitutional amendments.
Council of States : The constitutional name for India’s Rajya Sabha, retained in official usage alongside the familiar Hindi name. The constitution established the chamber as the Council of States.
Rajya Sabha chairman : The vice-president of India, who presides over Rajya Sabha sittings and maintains order in the chamber. The vice-president presides over debates and proceedings in the house.
Constitution of India : The supreme legal framework of India, adopted in 1949 and brought into force in 1950. Constitutional provisions establish the house, its membership, and its powers.
