Rallycross
Rallycross is automobile racing on short, closed circuits that combine paved and unpaved surfaces, with multiple cars competing simultaneously.
Rallycross race format: A competition structure in which drivers contest timed heats and qualifying rounds before knockout finals. Heats and finals turn simultaneous starts into a progressive contest.
Lydden Hill Race Circuit: A motorsport circuit in Kent, England, known as the birthplace of modern rallycross. The venue hosted the first event recognized as rallycross in 1967.
Rally racing: Automobile competition in which drivers race over a route divided into timed stages, usually on public or private roads. Rally racing is usually stage-timed, while rallycross competitors race together on a circuit.
Supercar (rallycross): A high-performance rallycross class using powerful, four-wheel-drive production-based cars. Supercar is the sport's best-known top-level combustion-engine category.
Group B: An FIA rally category active from 1982 to 1986, known for powerful cars and limited technical restrictions. Rallycross adopted some Group B cars, extending their competition life after the category ended.
Joker lap: An alternate section of a racing circuit that each driver must take at least once during a race. Its strategic timing adds a passing opportunity and tactical choice.
Robert Reed: A British television producer who devised the 1967 rallycross event at Lydden Hill. His broadcast concept brought rally drivers onto a compact mixed-surface course.
Autocross: A timed motorsport event in which drivers navigate a marked course, commonly one car at a time. The name overlaps, but autocross typically lacks rallycross's simultaneous grid starts.
Rallycross Lite: A lower-powered rallycross class using standardized, four-wheel-drive cars. The class provides a more accessible route into high-level rallycross competition.
Rallycross in popular culture: The representation of rallycross in television, video games, and other media. The sport's compact heats and visible action have made it suited to broadcast and games.
