Ram ventilation

Ram ventilation is respiration in which an animal’s forward movement forces water through its mouth and across its gills. It is especially associated with fast-swimming fishes and sharks.

Gill: A respiratory organ that extracts dissolved oxygen from water and releases carbon dioxide. Water driven through the mouth passes across these structures for gas exchange.
Obligate ram ventilation: A dependence on forward swimming to maintain sufficient water flow across the gills. It is the extreme form of reliance on swimming-driven ventilation.
Active ventilation: Respiratory ventilation produced by an organism’s own muscular movements. Muscular pumping can maintain gill flow without forward swimming.
Swimming: Locomotion through water by coordinated body or appendage movements. Forward swimming supplies the water flow needed for ventilation.
Countercurrent exchange: A transfer process in which two fluids flow in opposite directions, maintaining a gradient that promotes exchange. Opposing water and blood flows allow gills to extract oxygen efficiently.
Great white shark: A large predatory shark found in temperate and subtropical oceans worldwide. Great white sharks are commonly cited as sharks that rely on forward movement for ventilation.
Aquatic respiration: The uptake of oxygen and release of carbon dioxide using an aquatic environment. Ram ventilation is one way aquatic animals move water across respiratory surfaces.
Metabolic rate: The rate at which an organism uses energy through chemical processes. Maintaining movement to ventilate can increase the energy demanded by respiration.
Branchial arch: A skeletal support in the throat that bears or supports gill structures in fishes. Branchial arches support the gills exposed to the ram-driven flow.
Whale shark: The largest living fish, a filter-feeding shark found in tropical and warm temperate seas. This large shark ventilates while swimming and filtering water through its mouth.
