Rama I

Rama I, born Thongduang, founded the Chakri dynasty and ruled Siam from 1782 to 1809. He established Bangkok as the capital and rebuilt the kingdom after the fall of Ayutthaya.

Fall of Ayutthaya: The Burmese conquest of Ayutthaya in 1767 ended the Siamese kingdom centered on the city. Its destruction created the political crisis from which Rama I’s career emerged.
Bangkok: The capital and largest city of Thailand, founded as Siam’s capital by Rama I in 1782. Rama I moved the capital across the Chao Phraya River and made Bangkok the kingdom’s center.
Ayutthaya Kingdom: A powerful Siamese kingdom centered on Ayutthaya from the fourteenth century until its destruction in 1767. Rama I restored political and cultural traditions associated with this predecessor state.
Maha Sura Singhanat: A Siamese prince and military commander, younger brother of Rama I and deputy ruler of the early Chakri state. He led defenses against Burmese invasions alongside his brother.
King Taksin: Taksin ruled Siam from 1767 to 1782, reunifying much of the country after Ayutthaya fell. Rama I served Taksin before deposing him and taking the throne.
Grand Palace: A royal complex in Bangkok that has served as a major ceremonial and administrative center of Thailand. Rama I ordered its construction as part of establishing the new capital.
Chakri Maha Prasat Hall: A nineteenth-century palace hall within Bangkok’s Grand Palace, combining European and Thai architectural forms. Its later construction reflects the royal complex Rama I established.
Rama II: The second king of the Chakri dynasty, who ruled Siam from 1809 to 1824. Rama I’s son succeeded him and continued the new dynasty.
Thonburi Kingdom: The Siamese state ruled from Thonburi by Taksin between the fall of Ayutthaya and the founding of Bangkok. Rama I’s ascent ended this short-lived kingdom.
Rattanakosin Kingdom: The Siamese kingdom founded in 1782 with Bangkok as its capital, associated with the Chakri dynasty. Rama I’s reign opened this era of Siamese history.
