Rama III

Rama III was king of Siam from 1824 to 1851. His reign expanded commerce, strengthened Siam’s regional influence, and supported major Buddhist temple construction.

Bowring Treaty: A 1855 treaty that opened Siam to expanded British trade and limited royal control over commerce. Negotiated after Rama III’s death, it accelerated the commercial changes his reign had begun.
Sino-Siamese trade: Commercial exchange between China and Siam, including maritime trade carried by Chinese junks. This commerce supplied a major source of state revenue during Rama III’s reign.
Rama IV: King of Siam from 1851 to 1868, formerly known as Prince Mongkut. Rama III’s successor continued diplomacy with Western powers under growing pressure.

Burney Treaty: A 1826 agreement between Siam and Britain covering trade, territory, and relations with the Malay states. It formalized Rama III’s diplomacy with Britain and preserved significant Siamese commercial restrictions.
Crown Prince Pinklao: A younger brother of Rama IV who held high royal and military status in Siam. His later prominence reflects the royal military establishment strengthened during Rama III’s reign.
