Ramana Maharshi

Ramana Maharshi (1879–1950) was an Indian sage whose teaching centered on self-inquiry: tracing the sense of “I” to realize the Self.

Self-inquiry: A contemplative practice that investigates the sense of “I” to disclose its source. Ramana taught it as the direct means of realizing the Self.
Tiruchuli: A town in Tamil Nadu, India, where Ramana Maharshi was born in 1879. It was his birthplace before the event that redirected his life.
Muruganar: A Tamil poet and devotee of Ramana Maharshi who composed devotional and philosophical verse about him. His poetry preserves a major literary expression of Ramana’s teaching and presence.
Who Am I? (Ramana Maharshi): A short instruction on self-inquiry attributed to Ramana Maharshi and compiled from his early answers. It gives a direct, practical account of how he recommended investigating the “I” thought.

Ganapati Muni: An Indian Sanskrit scholar and ascetic who became a disciple of Ramana Maharshi. He helped establish the name Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi and articulated the sage’s teaching.
Upadesa Saram: A Sanskrit poem by Ramana Maharshi presenting a graded account of spiritual practice and realization. It sets self-inquiry and surrender within a concise map of paths to realization.
Jnana yoga: A path of spiritual knowledge that seeks liberation through discernment and insight into reality. Ramana’s inquiry is often understood as a direct form of this knowledge-centered path.
