Ramanuja

Ramanuja was an Indian philosopher and theologian who systematized Vishishtadvaita Vedanta and helped shape the Sri Vaishnava tradition.

Vishishtadvaita: A Vedanta school holding that ultimate reality is one, qualified by real souls and matter. This is the philosophical system Ramanuja organized and defended.
Prapatti: Complete surrender to God as a means of receiving divine protection and liberation in Sri Vaishnavism. Ramanuja’s tradition develops surrender as a path grounded in dependence on God.
Brahma Sutras: A foundational collection of aphorisms organizing teachings of the Upanishads. Ramanuja’s commentary, the Sri Bhashya, argues for his interpretation of these aphorisms.
Nathamuni: An early Sri Vaishnava teacher traditionally associated with collecting the Alvars’ Tamil hymns. He is remembered as an early architect of the lineage that preceded Ramanuja.
Sri Vaishnavism: A Hindu devotional tradition centered on Vishnu and Lakshmi, shaped by Sanskrit and Tamil scripture. Ramanuja became its leading theologian and a major organizer of its institutions.

Vedanta Desika: A later Sri Vaishnava philosopher, poet, and theologian who defended and elaborated the tradition. His writings developed Ramanuja’s legacy within the Vadakalai branch.
Srirangam: A temple city in Tamil Nadu centered on the Ranganathaswamy Temple, a major Vishnu shrine. The temple became a key center of Ramanuja’s religious life and Sri Vaishnava influence.
