Rancagua

Rancagua is a city in central Chile and the capital of the O’Higgins Region. It is known for the 1814 Battle of Rancagua and nearby copper mining.

Battle of Rancagua: A 1814 battle in which royalist forces defeated Chilean patriots in Rancagua. The battle brought the Patria Vieja period to an end and made the city a national symbol.
El Teniente: A large underground copper mine in the Andes east of Rancagua. Its operations and workforce have strongly influenced the city’s growth.
O’Higgins Region: An administrative region of central Chile, officially known as Libertador General Bernardo O’Higgins Region. Rancagua is its capital and principal urban center.
Rancagua Regional Museum: A museum in Rancagua presenting the history and cultural heritage of the O’Higgins Region. Its collections preserve material connected to the city and its surrounding region.
Patria Vieja: The first period of Chilean self-government, from 1810 until the royalist reconquest in 1814. Rancagua’s fall ended this early phase of Chilean independence.
Codelco: Chile’s state-owned copper mining company and one of the world’s largest copper producers. Codelco operates El Teniente, the major mine associated with Rancagua.
Central Chile: The central part of Chile, containing the country’s capital and much of its population and agriculture. Rancagua lies in this densely settled part of the country.
Plaza de los Héroes: The central square of Rancagua, associated with the Battle of Rancagua. The square’s name and setting commemorate the city’s independence-era history.
Bernardo O'Higgins: A Chilean independence leader who became the country’s first head of state. He commanded the patriot forces defeated at Rancagua.
