Rangaku

Rangaku was the study of Western science, technology, and medicine in Edo-period Japan, conducted chiefly through Dutch books and contacts.

Sakoku: The Edo shogunate’s system of restrictions on foreign relations and overseas travel. Restricted foreign contact concentrated European learning in a few tightly controlled channels.
Tsuji (interpreter): An official interpreter who mediated communication between Dutch traders and Japanese authorities. Interpreters provided linguistic expertise that later Dutch-learning scholars expanded.
Sugita Genpaku: An Edo-period physician who helped introduce Western anatomy through translation and publication. He led the translation of a Dutch anatomy book that became a landmark of Rangaku.
Western medicine in Japan: The introduction and development of medical knowledge from Europe within Japan. Rangaku’s best-known practical impact was the study and adoption of European medicine.
Bansha no goku: The 1820s shogunate crackdown on Japanese scholars associated with Western learning. The crackdown exposed political anxieties surrounding the foreign knowledge Rangaku brought into Japan.
Dejima: An artificial island in Nagasaki harbor that housed the Dutch East India Company’s trading post. Dutch residents and books reached Japan through this trading post.
Yoshio Kōgyū: An Edo-period Japanese interpreter and scholar of Dutch learning from Nagasaki. His Dutch-language expertise helped transmit European knowledge through Nagasaki.
Maeno Ryōtaku: An Edo-period physician and Dutch scholar who participated in translating a Western anatomy text. His Dutch knowledge was central to the work behind Kaitai Shinsho.
Dutch anatomy: Anatomical knowledge conveyed through Dutch medical texts and teaching in early modern Japan. Anatomy supplied a clear test case for comparing imported descriptions with observed bodies.
Tenpō Reforms: A set of political and economic reforms undertaken by the Tokugawa shogunate from 1841 to 1843. Rangaku scholars and ideas became part of late shogunate debates about national capacity.
