Rangefinder camera

A camera that measures subject distance with a rangefinder to assist focusing, often through a separate viewing window. Its focusing system is distinct from the image-taking lens.

Coupled rangefinder: A rangefinder mechanically or electronically linked to a camera lens’s focusing mechanism. Turning the lens shifts the rangefinder image until the two views coincide.
Single-lens reflex camera: A camera that uses a mirror to show through the taking lens in its optical viewfinder. Its through-the-lens view avoids the rangefinder camera’s framing parallax.
Theodor Scheimpflug: An Austrian military officer and photographic inventor associated with camera and lens design. His early rangefinder-camera work helped establish the form before 35 mm models became common.
