Rani of Jhansi

Lakshmibai was the queen of Jhansi who became a leading figure in the Indian Rebellion of 1857, resisting British rule and dying in battle in 1858.

Doctrine of Lapse: A British East India Company policy that annexed princely states when rulers died without an accepted natural male heir. The Company invoked this policy to annex Jhansi after Lakshmibai’s husband died.
