Ranjit Singh

Ranjit Singh (1780–1839) was the founder and first maharaja of the Sikh Empire, uniting much of Punjab under his rule from 1801 until his death.

Sukerchakia Misl: A Sikh confederacy in Punjab led by Ranjit Singh’s family before his rise to power. Ranjit Singh inherited its leadership and territorial base from his father, Maha Singh.
Sikh Empire: A kingdom centered on Punjab that Ranjit Singh established and ruled from 1801 to 1839. It was the state he built from competing Sikh and regional powers.
Kharak Singh: Ranjit Singh’s eldest legitimate son, who succeeded him as maharaja in 1839. His troubled succession began the court instability that followed his father’s death.
British East India Company: A trading company that governed large parts of South Asia and fought the Sikh Empire in the nineteenth century. Ranjit Singh balanced its expansion through diplomacy and a firm frontier agreement.
Golden Temple: The central shrine of Sikhism, located in Amritsar and also known as Harmandir Sahib. Ranjit Singh funded its marble work and gilded copper exterior.
Maha Singh: A Sikh chief who led the Sukerchakia Misl and was Ranjit Singh’s father. His rule and early death left Ranjit Singh in succession as a young leader.
Khalsa Army: The army of the Sikh Empire, reorganized under Ranjit Singh with European-style training and equipment. Its reforms strengthened the kingdom against neighboring powers and internal rivals.
First Anglo-Sikh War: A war fought between the Sikh Empire and the British East India Company in 1845–1846. It followed years of succession crises and weakened the state Ranjit Singh had founded.
Dost Mohammad Khan: The emir of Kabul who founded the Barakzai dynasty and ruled Afghanistan for much of the nineteenth century. His rivalry with Ranjit Singh centered on control of Peshawar and the Afghan frontier.
Takht Sri Patna Sahib: A major Sikh shrine in Patna associated with Guru Gobind Singh’s birth and childhood. Ranjit Singh supported its construction as part of his patronage of Sikh sites.
