Raoul Island

Raoul Island is the largest island in New Zealand’s remote Kermadec Islands, formed by the exposed rim and slopes of an active volcanic caldera in the southwestern Pacific Ocean.

Raoul Island caldera: A volcanic caldera occupying much of Raoul Island, with crater lakes and active geothermal features. Its collapse structure defines the island’s central landscape and records its volcanic activity.
Kermadec Islands: A remote volcanic island group belonging to New Zealand, between Tonga and New Zealand’s North Island. Raoul is the largest island in this archipelago.
Raoul Island Station: A New Zealand Department of Conservation field station on Raoul Island. The station supports island management, monitoring, and visiting scientific work.

Meyer Islands: Two small islands off Raoul Island’s northern coast, important for seabirds. Their protected breeding habitat contrasts with the main island’s modified lowland areas.
Raoul Island eruption of 2006: A phreatic eruption at Raoul Island that killed Department of Conservation worker Mark Kearney. It demonstrated the sudden hazards posed by the island’s active geothermal system.
Kermadec volcanic arc: A chain of volcanoes produced by subduction along the boundary between the Pacific and Australian plates. Raoul is the emerged part of a volcano in this arc.
