Knowra Rapid Support Forces Rapid Support Forces The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are a Sudanese paramilitary force that grew out of Janjaweed militias and became a major rival to Sudan’s regular army and civilian authorities.
Janjaweed : A loose label for Arab militias active in Darfur, especially during the conflict that began in 2003. The RSF developed from these militias, which Sudan’s government armed and mobilized in Darfur.
Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo : A Sudanese commander known as Hemedti who leads the Rapid Support Forces and became a national political figure. He transformed the RSF from a militia-derived force into a central contender for state power.
Gold mining in Sudan : The extraction of gold across Sudan, including through mines and companies linked to military and paramilitary elites. Gold revenues and commercial networks helped the RSF build financial independence from the state.
Sudanese revolution : A popular uprising from 2018 to 2019 that ended Omar al-Bashir’s rule and opened a contested political transition. The RSF’s commanders retained power after Bashir’s fall, complicating civilian efforts to govern.
Security sector reform : The process of making military, police and intelligence institutions effective, accountable and subject to civilian oversight. Integrating or reorganizing the RSF is a central security-sector reform challenge in Sudan.
Darfur genocide : Mass violence against civilians in Darfur, beginning in 2003, that has been characterized as genocide by the United States and others. The RSF’s predecessor militias gained power through campaigns of violence against Darfur’s non-Arab communities.
Abdel Rahim Dagalo : A Sudanese military commander and deputy leader of the Rapid Support Forces, and brother of Hemedti. His senior command role illustrates how family ties shape the force’s leadership.
Jebel Amer : A major gold-mining area in North Darfur that came under the control of forces associated with Hemedti. Control of this mining center strengthened the Dagalo network’s wealth and influence.
2021 Sudanese coup d'état : The military takeover in Sudan on 25 October 2021 that dissolved civilian-led transitional institutions. RSF leader Hemedti joined the military leadership that seized power from the transition.
Disarmament, demobilization and reintegration : Programs that disarm combatants, disband armed groups and support former fighters’ return to civilian life. Demobilization offers a different path from incorporating the RSF intact into the national army.
