Rapping

Rapping is rhythmic spoken or chanted vocal delivery, commonly performed over a beat. It combines patterned speech with rhyme, timing, and vocal expression.

Flow (rap): The rhythmic phrasing and timing of a rapper’s vocal delivery. Flow describes how syllables ride, anticipate, or push against a beat.
Hip-hop: A cultural movement and set of artistic practices that developed in the Bronx during the 1970s. Rapping became one of hip-hop’s central expressive forms.
Rhythm: The organization of sound and silence in time. Rapping depends on patterned timing, whether or not a beat accompanies it.
Battle rap: A form of rap competition in which performers use lyrics to challenge or insult opponents. It turns lyrical skill and improvised response into a contest.
Singing: The production of musical tones with the human voice. Singing generally sustains pitches, while rapping foregrounds rhythmic speech.
Rhyme scheme: A pattern of rhymes across lines or within a passage of verse. Rappers use rhyme patterns to organize lyrics and create musical expectation.
The Bronx: A borough of New York City and the birthplace of hip-hop culture. Block parties in the Bronx helped establish rapping over DJ breaks.
Beat (music): The underlying pulse that organizes musical time. A beat gives many rap performances a temporal framework for phrasing.
Freestyle rap battle: A rap contest centered on improvised lyrics delivered in response to an opponent. It tests spontaneous writing, timing, and audience command.
Spoken word: Performance poetry delivered aloud, often with emphasis on language rather than instrumental accompaniment. Spoken word can share rap’s verbal intensity without its regular beat relationship.
