Ras Al Khaimah

Ras Al Khaimah is one of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates, on its northern coast along the Persian Gulf. Its territory includes coastal plains, desert, and the Hajar Mountains.

United Arab Emirates: A federation of seven emirates on the southeastern Arabian Peninsula, formed in 1971. Ras Al Khaimah is one of the federation’s constituent emirates.
Qawasim: An Arab tribal and ruling group historically based around Ras Al Khaimah and Sharjah. The Qawasim became the ruling house of Ras Al Khaimah.
Jebel Jais: The highest mountain in the United Arab Emirates, located in the Hajar range near Ras Al Khaimah. Its cooler uplands and outdoor attractions anchor the emirate’s mountain tourism.
Sharjah: One of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates, bordering Ras Al Khaimah to the southwest. It is the neighboring emirate along Ras Al Khaimah’s southwestern boundary.
Pearl diving in the Persian Gulf: A traditional Gulf industry in which divers gathered natural pearls from oyster beds. Pearl diving shaped coastal livelihoods in Ras Al Khaimah before cultured pearls disrupted the trade.
Persian Gulf: A shallow inland sea between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran, connected to the Gulf of Oman. The emirate’s northern coastline faces this body of water.
Trucial States: A group of sheikhdoms on the southern Persian Gulf coast that entered treaty relations with Britain. Ras Al Khaimah was one of these sheikhdoms before joining the UAE.
Jais Flight: A long mountain zipline attraction in the Jebel Jais area of Ras Al Khaimah. It exemplifies the emirate’s use of mountain terrain for adventure tourism.
Umm Al Quwain: One of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates, situated between Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah. Its territory lies immediately southwest of Ras Al Khaimah’s coastal area.
Dhayah Fort: An inland hilltop fort in Ras Al Khaimah, associated with the region’s history and defense. Its position and surviving structures embody the emirate’s historical landscape.
