Rashid Rida

Rashid Rida (1865–1935) was a Syrian-Egyptian Islamic reformer and editor of the influential journal Al-Manar. He promoted Islamic renewal and helped shape modern Salafi thought.

Muhammad Abduh: An Egyptian Islamic scholar and reformer who served as Egypt’s grand mufti from 1899 to 1905. Abduh became Rida’s mentor and collaborator, and their shared reform project shaped Al-Manar.
Al-Manar: An Arabic Islamic reform journal published in Cairo from 1898 to 1935 under Rashid Rida’s editorship. Rida used the journal to circulate religious commentary, political analysis, and reform proposals.
Ottoman Syria: The Syrian provinces of the Ottoman Empire before their division into modern states after World War I. Rida grew up in Ottoman Syria, where debates over reform and imperial authority shaped his early outlook.

Ijtihad: Independent juristic reasoning used to derive Islamic legal judgments from recognized sources. Rida argued for renewed reasoning to address changing conditions rather than rely solely on inherited rulings.
Cairo: Egypt’s capital and a major center of Arabic publishing and Islamic scholarship. Rida moved to Cairo in 1897, where he joined Abduh and established Al-Manar.
Caliphate: A form of Islamic political leadership historically associated with succession to Muhammad’s authority over the Muslim community. Rida’s post-1924 writings proposed a reformed caliphate as a source of Muslim political unity.
Hasan al-Banna: An Egyptian teacher who founded the Society of the Muslim Brothers in 1928. Banna drew on Rida’s reformist writing and helped carry parts of his legacy into organized Islamism.
Taqlid: Following established legal authority or precedent rather than independently deriving a ruling. Rida criticized uncritical adherence to inherited opinions as an obstacle to renewal.
