Rashidun Caliphate

The first Islamic caliphate, ruled from 632 to 661 by four successors to Muhammad. Based in Arabia, it expanded into the Middle East and North Africa.

Caliph: A leader regarded as Muhammad’s successor in governing the Muslim community. The caliphate’s authority rested on the office held by its four rulers.
Muhammad: The religious and political leader whose preaching founded Islam and united much of Arabia. His death in 632 created the question of who would lead the Muslim community.
Ali: The fourth caliph, ruling from 656 to 661, and a cousin and son-in-law of Muhammad. His contested rule ended the Rashidun period and became central to later succession debates.
First Fitna: The first major civil war among Muslims, fought from 656 to 661 amid disputes over Uthman’s killing and Ali’s authority. The conflict consumed Ali’s reign and brought the Rashidun caliphate to an end.
Ridda Wars: Campaigns fought by Abu Bakr’s forces against Arabian tribes that rejected the new Muslim polity after Muhammad’s death. Their outcome restored central authority over much of Arabia.
Constitution of Medina: A set of agreements traditionally associated with Muhammad that organized relations among groups in Medina. It offers context for the community whose leadership the caliphate inherited.
Aisha: A wife of Muhammad who became a prominent transmitter of hadith and participant in early Muslim politics. Her opposition to Ali culminated in the Battle of the Camel.
Battle of Siffin: A 657 battle between Ali’s forces and Muawiya’s forces during the First Fitna. Its inconclusive outcome and arbitration weakened Ali’s position.
Conquest of Persia: The seventh-century military campaigns that brought the Sasanian Empire under Muslim rule. These campaigns extended Rashidun rule eastward and ended the Sasanian monarchy.
Saقifah: The meeting at Saqifah in Medina where prominent Muslims selected Abu Bakr as leader after Muhammad’s death. The choice made there established the first caliph’s claim to leadership.
