Rashomon

A 1950 Japanese film directed by Akira Kurosawa, in which conflicting accounts of a samurai’s death expose uncertainty about truth, memory, and self-interest.

Unreliable narrator: A narrator whose account is compromised by limited knowledge, bias, deception, or confusion. Each witness presents a version shaped by motives and a fallible view of events.
Ryūnosuke Akutagawa: A Japanese writer known for psychologically incisive short stories, including “In a Grove.” His story supplied the conflicting testimonies at the center of the film.
Toshirō Mifune: A Japanese actor celebrated for his many films with Akira Kurosawa. Mifune plays the bandit Tajōmaru, whose boastful testimony drives one account.
