Raúl Leoni

Raúl Leoni was a Venezuelan lawyer and politician who served as president from 1964 to 1969. His administration continued Venezuela’s democratic transition and oversaw economic development alongside political conflict and repression.

Generation of 1928: A group of Venezuelan student activists whose 1928 protests challenged the dictatorship of Juan Vicente Gómez. Leoni emerged from the student movement that made opposition politics a defining part of his career.
Rómulo Betancourt: A Venezuelan politician who helped found Democratic Action and served as president from 1945 to 1948 and 1959 to 1964. Betancourt preceded Leoni and helped establish the democratic system his successor inherited.

Juan Vicente Gómez: A Venezuelan military ruler who governed as dictator from 1908 until his death in 1935. Gómez’s dictatorship shaped the opposition movement Leoni joined as a young student.
Marcos Pérez Jiménez: A Venezuelan military dictator who ruled from 1952 to 1958 before being overthrown. Leoni’s presidency followed the dictatorship Pérez Jiménez represented and its overthrow.
