Raymond Dart

Raymond Dart (1893–1988) was an Australian-born South African anatomist who identified the Taung Child as a fossil of Australopithecus africanus, an early hominin.

Robert Broom: A Scottish-born South African paleontologist who discovered important Australopithecus fossils at Sterkfontein. Broom’s discoveries helped establish Dart’s African hominin interpretation.
Taung Child: A juvenile Australopithecus africanus skull discovered in South Africa and described by Raymond Dart in 1925. This is the fossil Dart identified as an early human relative.
Out of Africa theory: The family of models proposing that modern humans originated in Africa before dispersing elsewhere. Dart’s fossil challenged claims that humanity’s earliest ancestors came from Asia.
Taung Child age debate: The historical dispute over whether the Taung Child was an adult ape or a juvenile hominin. Dart’s conclusion was initially rejected partly because observers misjudged the fossil’s age.
Arthur Keith: A British anatomist who argued that human evolution began in Asia and emphasized brain size. Keith opposed Dart’s early African-origin claim and disputed the Taung Child’s significance.
Australopithecus africanus: An extinct species of early hominin known from fossils found in southern Africa. Dart assigned the Taung Child to this species, which he named in 1925.
Piltdown Man: A fraudulent fossil assemblage presented as an early human ancestor in England and exposed in 1953. Its apparent support for a large-brained, European ancestor helped eclipse Dart’s Taung interpretation.
Piltdown Man hoax: A scientific fraud that combined human and ape remains to create a false early human fossil. The hoax reinforced expectations that conflicted with Dart’s small-brained African fossil.
Phillip Tobias: A South African paleoanthropologist who studied human evolution and helped interpret fossils from southern Africa. Tobias later defended and developed Dart’s interpretation of Australopithecus.
Makapansgat Pebble: A naturally shaped jasperite pebble from the Makapansgat cave deposits, interpreted by Raymond Dart as an early manuport. Dart used it to argue that australopiths recognized and collected meaningful shapes.
